Plant a Tree for the Jubilee
This year marks 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II, she will be the first British royal in history to reach this milestone. So, with an extra bank holiday to mark the occasion there will be many events up and down the country to mark the Platinum Jubilee!
One of the projects that sparked our interest is the ‘Queen’s Green Canopy’ which is a tree planting initiative to mark the Platinum Jubilee and encourages everyone to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”!
With a focus on planting sustainably the project encourages the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s reign and something that will also benefit all future generations.
So, that is exactly what we are going to aim for, creating a legacy and to do that we have enlisted the Polhill staff team to help! With a trusted supplier on hand, we ordered a range of bare rooted trees including a Mountain Ash, Flowering Cherry and a Crab Apple.
Once the trees are planted, we will be adding them to The Queen’s Green Canopy map. Have a look to see how many trees have been planted so far: https://queensgreencanopy.org/map-education-hub/qgc-map/#/
We are starting to see the effects of climate change every day, whether it is the rising temperatures or flooding in certain areas of the world. To reduce these effects the world has set a goal to reduce global CO2 emissions and reach net zero emissions by 2050. It can seem like a big ask to try and do things to help the world with climate change, however if we all do something small it can make a big difference.
DID YOU KNOW?
- British Oak Trees support an estimated 2,300 species, an incredible variety of wildlife
- A mature tree can absorb up to 150kg of CO2 a year
- UK Green spaces remove up to 1.3 billion kg of air pollutants each year
- Well-placed trees can help cool the air between 2 and 8 degrees in urban communities
In the words of Sir David Attenborough “Cherish the Natural World, because we are a part of it and we depend on it.” – so, let’s get planting! We hope you will join us in planting a tree for the Jubilee, don’t forget to tag us in and add your tree to the map.
Keep an eye out for our special Jubilee tree that we will be planting on the Polhill grounds and adding a special plaque to mark the occasion too!
