Every year we always look forward to the start of Spring, waiting in anticipation of the first deliveries of bedding plants to arrive, flush with colour and smelling glorious.
As Gardeners we will need to start adapting to our change in weather and climate, which will in turn change our plant choices and most importantly the growing season. Choosing more drought tolerant plants will enable our gardens to bloom through hot summers and they will be more hardy when it comes to the wet winters too.
A good way to identify a drought tolerant plant is the colour of their leaves. The majority have sliver or grey green as these light colours, as it reflects the harsh rays of the sun.
- Cordyline australis ‘Red Star’ (when planted in the ground)
- Hebe
- Lavender
- Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow (Perennial)
- Heuchera
Containers and border plants:
- Gazania
- Osteospermum (great for raised beds)
- Verbena
- Pelagonium
Wildlife friendly gardening
- Bee & Butterfly Friendly flowering plants:
- Dahlias (single-flowered varieties) : Double-flowers are beautiful, but sadly there are too many petals for the bees to get the nectar. So, opt for more single flowered varieties, including; ‘Dahlegria Red’, ‘Bishop of Auckland’ and ‘Totally Tangerine’.
- Gaillardia (Sunset Cutie)
- Foxgloves (Digitalis) : A summer favourite and with so many different colour variations it’s hard to know which one to choose. However, watching the bees bundling themselves into each flower is always a joy.
- Cosmos : These may be an annual but the bright whites and pinks are gorgeous in a flower bed and are loved by bees, butterflies and bugs alike. They are also great for small spaces and would be ideal in a window box.
- Salvias (Hot Lips)
- Verbena bonariensis is a great wildflower that you will have seen on grass verges or on a woodland walk. This is why it makes such a good choice for your garden and it’s a perennial too so you can enjoy it year after year.
- Sunflowers : A great one for beginners and children alike. You can grow them from seed or we sell them as a small potted plant. Sunflowers are not only loved by bees, but once they have finished flowering, they are great food source for the birds too!
What is the difference between perennials, annuals and biennial plants?
Perennial plants typically die off in the winter and produce new growth in the Spring, lasting around three years or more. Every year at Polhill we have an extensive collection of Herbaceous Perennials in our plant department, which gives customers plenty of choice and variety to pick the right plant for their garden!
Annuals, as the name suggests, bloom only once a year. Sadly once you have enjoyed the beautifully colour and fragrance from your favourite annual, it will die off completely.
However, if you’re lucky, plants such as Cosmos for example may leave some seeds behind! This won’t always be the case though. Biennial plants such as Dianthus (known as Sweet William) and Hollyhocks will bloom in the first year as well as the second.
