Dryopteris affinis, also known as the scaly male fern, golden-scaled male fern, or golden shield fern, is a large, evergreen fern that is native to western and southern Europe and southwestern Asia. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate a wide range of conditions, including moist shade, dry shade, and full sun. It has long, bipinnate fronds that can grow up to 1.2 meters in height. The fronds are bright yellow-green when young, later becoming rich green. The underside of the fronds is covered in dense, golden scales.

The new fronds emerge in the springtime and are a coppery red color. As the season progresses, the fronds mature and turn dark green.
