In 1882, Edward Johnson, a friend of celebrated inventor Thomas Edison, first wrapped a string of bulbs around a Christmas tree. Over a century later, we’re still obsessed with Christmas lighting. At Polhill, we’re proud to be among the UK’s leading suppliers of Christmas lights and decorations. We stock both interior and exterior Christmas lighting. Choose from icicle lights, globe lights, cluster lights, net lights and string lights. Looking to replicate the Cottagecore look? Try hanging warm white string lights around the edges of your property. Warm white evokes feelings of warmth and well-being and looks perfect in older properties. Try adding a light-up wreath or garland to your door for the ultimate rustic look. Cool white bulbs, on the other hand, are great for those looking to achieve a more contemporary aesthetic. Want to make an impression? Check out our range of curtain lights. Versatile and breath-taking, curtain lights can be hung indoors or outdoors. Try hanging them from windows or walls. If you’re searching for something a little more vibrant, we also stock a range of brightly coloured bulbs, available as string lights, cluster lights, globe lights and more. Our multi-coloured bulbs look fantastic when fitted over entryways or around windows. Searching for something simple but want to stand out from the crowd? Choose minimalist red berry or pine green string lights. Our lighting is stylish, sturdy and innovative Our collection of Christmas lights includes both battery and mains-operated lights. All of our Christmas lights use LED bulbs. LED bulbs are energy-efficient, boast a lengthy lifespan and do not emit heat or UV. We stock an extensive range of outdoor lighting. All of our outdoor lighting is waterproof and undergoes rigorous performance testing to ensure that it’s capable of withstanding the British weather. We only stock bulbs from trusted manufacturers. Many of our bulbs feature colour-changing technology and can be operated remotely. How to hang Christmas lights? Hanging Christmas lights can be challenging and time-consuming, but it's definitely worth the effort! To hang Christmas lights successfully, you’ll need a tape measure and gutter hooks or decorating clips to hang string or rope lights. If you’re hanging mains-operated exterior lights, you’ll need a waterproof extension lead. Use a tape measure to make sure that the extension lead is long enough. Make sure to use a ladder if you’re hanging lights along a high wall or window. Test your lights before you begin to hang them. We recommend attaching decorating clips or gutter hooks at regular intervals, normally every 30 - 50cm. For heavier lights, such as icicles or large bulb lights, place clips and hooks at shorter intervals. Make sure that there is a clip or hook in place to support the end of your string of lights. How many lights do I need for my Christmas tree? There is much dispute over the optimum number of lights for a Christmas tree, but we recommend hanging 100 bulbs per 2ft of Christmas tree. This corresponds to around 5 metres of lights. For a six-foot tree, you’ll need around 15 metres of lights. If you’re going for a minimalist look, we recommend hanging fewer lights or strings with smaller bulbs. For a busier look, try mixing and matching light styles. Who invented Christmas lights? Light has long been associated with Christmas. Prior to the invention of light bulbs in 1880, many families use candles as decorations on Christmas trees and in windows. In 1882 Edward Johnson, a friend of Thomas Edisons, hung a string of brightly coloured bulbs around a Christmas tree. Several decades later, Christmas lighting became less expensive and more prevalent.
