Where and When to Plant Spring Bulbs
Spring bulbs need cold temperatures to bloom, so they must be planted outdoors before the first frost. Even December can be a good time to plant as long as the soil isn’t frozen. Here are a few quick tips for planting success:
- Use well-drained soil to prevent bulbs from rotting.
- In pots or containers, ensure there’s a drainage hole and a base layer of pot shards or hydro granules.
- For grassy areas, bulbs like snowdrops, crocuses, and daffodils can be planted by lifting sod, planting, and replacing the turf. Remember to delay mowing the area until the bulbs’ leaves have fully died back.
How to Plant Bulbs
Follow this golden rule: plant bulbs at a depth of two to three times their height, with the tip facing up. If you’re unsure about the bulb’s top, plant it sideways – it will still grow properly. To achieve a natural look in your garden, scatter the bulbs randomly over the planting area and place them where they land. In pots, you can layer different types of bulbs for continuous blooming – this is known as the ‘lasagna method.’
