1: Recycling Policy
We recycle our plastics, glass, paper and cardboard where possible and encourage customers to care for the environment with our range of machine washable ‘Bags for Life’ made from 100% cotton. We also have a facility to recycle water. We compost all green waste from our garden centre and use it for soil improvement, mulching or as planting material where appropriate.
2: Timber Buying Policy
Here at Polhill Garden Centre we take our responsibility for sourcing timber products very seriously. We are striving towards being able to ensure that all the timber we sell comes from sources that are credibly certified as well-managed, or from recycled materials and we believe firmly in offering products from sustainable and environmentally friendly sources.
3: FSC Policy
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. It was founded in 1993 in response to concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. Wherever possible we purchase FSC certificated furniture.
4: Peat Policy
Our Peat Policy is currently under review - please check this page regularly for updates.
We are continually looking at ways to provide high quality plants in peat-free substitutes and biodegradable packaging.
5: Local Sourcing Policy
We are constantly reviewing our choice of organic and environmentally friendly gardening products and we actively source our stock locally whenever possible.
Our Food Hall champions locally produced specialities from the surrounding counties, such as honey, cheeses, organically grown fruit juices, jams and chutneys, cakes and bakery, dairy and butchery.
At Novell's Restaurant (Polhill Sevenoaks) we understand the importance of using good local produce to create superb dishes - we source herbs, soft fruits and vegetables from a local farm.
Milk is provided by cows living in Sussex and Kent and the meats we use include Kentish Pork.
6: Fairtrade Policy
We offer Fairtrade coffee in Novell's Restaurant (Polhill Sevenoaks).
7: Low Energy Lighting
We have installed new low energy lighting throughout our centre to maximise efficiency and minimise wastage.
8: BBC Breathing Places - Tree O'Clock Event
To help celebrate National Tree Week, BBC Breathing Places teamed up with Guinness World Records for Tree O'Clock - a nationwide challenge to plant as many trees as possible within a single hour.
The attempt was to unite the nation in mass tree planting to provide a lasting legacy for communities across the UK for many years to come and by encouraging people to plant the right tree in the right place, BBC Breathing Places were delivering a very special learning opportunity.
Here at Polhill Garden Centre we love a challenge and took this opportunity to support a great cause by inviting everyone down to Polhill Garden Centre to plant a tree and support the BBC Tree O’clock event. With fantastic support from members of the territorial army, local companies, schools, allotment associations and the famous general public together with a great team spirit,
we successfully succeeded in planting 2,412 trees in just 40 minutes over 2 acres of land!!!
The tree selection consisted of Oak, Field Maple, Silver Birch, Hawthorn, Wild Cherry, Beech and Rowan trees and the benefit to the local wildlife will continue for decades to come. As we have said all along, when you plant a tree, think of it as planting a bird table and it will encourage birds and other wildlife to the area. It will also help towards improving the environment and restoring natural harmony!
Polhill Garden Centre will continue to nurture the trees throughout their early development and beyond and everyone coming down to Polhill will be able to see them growing as time goes on!
Polhill Garden Centre would like to thank everyone who took part in this event and is genuinely proud of the contribution made by all participants in supporting this fantastic cause and World Record Attempt.
